Astrology is a divinatory practice that has been widespread in many cultures for centuries, and has a special place in countries such as China. Astrology has been practised in China since the time of the ancient empires until today, when it has experienced a revival thanks to the demographic explosion of Mao’s country in the 1960s and 1970s and the economic and cultural globalisation of the 2000s.

Characteristics of Chinese astrology

Chinese astrology is essentially based on the study of a hundred or so stars and stars or on the legend of the animals that make up the signs of the Chinese zodiac. Chinese astrology is based on the lunar year which begins in January or February, unlike western astrology which is based on the sun. In Chinese astrology, the Yin and Yang, i.e. the positive and negative, play an important role in the reading of the stars and the signs of the zodiac. In Chinese astrology, each year corresponds to a particular animal sign and its cycles are formed by twelve years. The main Chinese astrological signs are: rat, buffalo, hare or cat, dragon, snake, horse, goat or sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and, finally, wild boar or pig. Each of these signs are related to one of the five elements that make up the universe: Earth, Metal, Water, Wood and Fire. Chinese astrologers have linked each of these elements with a planet, for example Jupiter is associated with Wood, Mars with Fire. Colours are also to be taken into consideration such as white in relation to Venus or green with the planet Jupiter.

The peculiarity of the sign of the pig for this year 2019

In Chinese astrology, the calendar is lunar, the New Year takes place every year on the day of the first full moon (between January and February). For this year 2019, it is the year of the pig which is linked with the earth element. For the Chinese, the Year of the Pig is important especially for those who cultivate and work the land, because it takes place under the sign of abundance. The pig is the sign of the zodiac which is linked to female fertility and conjugal life. The sign of the pig will also have an influence on people’s personalities because they will be more polite and kind to others. Economically, the financial situation of households will improve because money should be in abundance for this year. Lucky numbers are associated with this year’s pig sign, 1, 3 or 4 and 5. The pig is compatible with the signs of the rabbit and the goat.  Many Asians who have adopted the lunar calendar have celebrated the arrival of the year of the pig after the end of the year of the dog. In western astrology the equivalent sign of the pig is scorpio.

How can you easily determine your Chinese astrological sign?

The Chinese zodiac sign can be determined from its date of birth and year of birth. The time of birth is also taken into account to know exactly his sign and his destiny in the Chinese zodiac, for example to know his ascendant or compatible signs. Thus, if a person was born between February 7, 2008 and January 25, 2009, he or she will be of the sign of the rat. On the contrary, if another person was born between February 3rd 2011 and January 22nd 2012, he will be of the rabbit zodiac. Many free websites offer to determine a person’s zodiac sign. In conclusion, many analogies can be made between Chinese and Western astrology as the same number of zodiac signs is twelve.
